Jock Taylor Sidecar Superprix - Knockhill Racing Circuit

JOCK TAYLOR SUPERPRIX (NEW) - Sat 14th & Sun 15th August - 9am-5pm

Celebrating Fife Organisers at Knockhill Racing Circuit and the KDMC are delighted to announce a new format for the Fife Council supported motorcycle event on August 14th / 15th featuring the 30th anniversary of Jock Taylor winning the World Championship in 1980.

This will be the final Jock Taylor sidecar races, so it is anticipated that the largest number of sidecars seen in recent years will turn out to celebrate this landmark anniversary of the late and great Jock Taylor. In addition, full Scottish Championship racing, feature display bikes, club stands and invited star guests will perform, including the ex world Stunt riding champion, Scotsman Kevin Carmichael.

This is due to the surprising and unforeseen announcement that the round of the FIM World Sidecar Championship at Knockhill is not now happening. Event Director, Stuart Gray, said “I know hosting a Grand Prix would have had great kudos and prestige, however, what better way to fill the void than celebrate one of Scotland’s racing heroes, Jock Taylor. A massive seven races are on offer for sidecar teams, a prize fund of £2000 with prize money on every lap of 3 times 10 lap race format. And all for only £100 entry fee! Teams interested should contact the KDMC directly on 01592 650 871 or 07917 422 574.”

In addition to the side car and solo bike racing and Kevin Carmichael stunt riding, a number of other exciting elements are being worked on to make the 14th and 15th of August a real motorcycle racing festival. Details will be announced in due course as and when they are confirmed.

Jock Taylor Memorial Trophy & Scottish Championship Bike Racing (KDMC)Jock Taylor (9th March 1954 – 15th August 1982) was born in Pencaitland, East Lothian. He began his racing career in 1974 aged just 19, as passenger to Kenny Andrews. In 1975 he took part in his first race as driver. By 1977 he had won the Scottish Sidecar Championship. He went on to become British Sidecar Champion in 1979 and 1980, during which year he and passenger Benga Johannson claimed World Championship honours. He went on to win the arduous Isle of Man TT no less than four times, in the process setting a lap record of 108.29 mph – an achievement that stood for seven years.

In 1982, Jock was tragically killed at the Grand Prix at Imatra in Finland. Racing on what was essentially a public road temporarily converted to a race track Jock’s outfit aquaplaned on standing water and collided with a telephone pole. As the marshals were trying to extract him from this situation, another sidecar team also met the same conditions and ran into them.

Jock’s enduring popularity is evidenced by the number of teams who regularly compete for the trophy named for him: ten-times FIM World Sidecar Champion Steve Webster has his name is on that trophy more than anyone else. Perhaps that, as much as anything, indicates the level of esteem in which he was held, not only by his fellow-racers, but by his thousands of fans throughout the world. This enduring admiration continues, and twenty-seven years on, we continue to honour Scotland’s World Sidecar Champion.
