McNish fourth-fastest at Silverstone

Dumfries racer Allan McNish posted the fourth-fastest time in pre-qualifying for Sunday’s final round of the European Le Mans Series, the Silverstone 1000Kms. The 38-year-old Scot lapped the Northamptonshire circuit in 1min 33.754secs.

“We’ve got a bit of time to find ahead of Saturday’s qualifying,” 38-year-old McNish, who won the Le Mans 24-Hours race in June and whose Audi R10 TDI today finished 2.244s behind the Peugeot of provisional pole-sitter Stephane Sarrazin, admitted.

This weekend’s 621-mile Silverstone race is the Scot’s first in Britain since 2005 when McNish and co-driver Stéphane Ortelli scored a dramatic, last-gasp victory after varying degrees of rain wrecked havoc.

But McNish faces a tough weekend after the two Peugeots dominated the session with the second car of Nicolas Minassian just 0.041s behind his championship rival.

Mike Rockenfeller, who along with co-driver Alexandre Premat can still take the drivers’ title away from Minassian, was third fastest in the No2 Audi R10 TDI.
