Rangers snub young Scots for Superleague

Just days after clinching the SPL, Rangers have snubbed the growing crop of talented young Scottish racing drivers by confirming Australian John Martin will pilot the team’s car in this season’s Superleague Formula.

The  24-year-old  A1GP racer made a one-off outing for Comtec Racing in Formula Renault 3.5 at Monaco last weekend and raced in British Formula 3 and A1GP in 2007 and 2008.

But while ignoring up-and-coming Scots racers such as Glasgow’s British Formula Ford champion David Brown, Rangers chief executive Martin Bain — who employed Wishaw’s Ryan Dalziel to drive the car last season — welcomed Martin to the fold.

“We are excited to have a driver of John’s talents racing for Rangers in this year’s Superleague Formula,” Bain said today. “Now we’ve won the SPL title, it would be great to start enjoying similar success on the race track.”

The six-round championship — which gets underway at Magny-Cours in France on June 27 — will be contested by V12 and 750bhp single-seaters representing some of the biggest football teams in the world, including AC Milan, Galatasaray, Liverpool and Roma.
