Knockhill Club Racing – Round 3

The third round of the Knockhill Motor Sports Club bike racing took place at Knockhill today (Saturday 25th June). Alongside the usual bike racing classes, this round also witnessed the opening round of the Knockhill Sidecar Championship for the Steve Webster Trophy.

Sidecar team of Scott Lawrie and James Neave returned to Knockhill after performing last week as part of the British Superbike event. Despite a major hiccup on the start line and giving the rest of the field a full lap head start, the Eastern Airways British sidecar duo still crossed the finish line in first place. The experienced duo lapped the circuit on average 3 seconds quicker than their closest rivals of James Neil and Graham Whitehill to win.

The BMW Motorrad Central Superstock 600 class provided fans with some of the most competitive racing today. Championship leader Mike McLean has had the fantastic knack of being on the podium in each and every race this season. However the tide changed at the last round as Roy Houston took the rider of the day award and with it, two race wins.

Houston set out this weekend for race wins on board his Kawasaki ZX-6 courtesy of Kirkcaldy Kawasaki and didn’t disappoint. The Kirkcaldy rider was in dominant form and scored three wins with main championship rival, McLean scoring 3rd , 9th and 2nd place finishes.

In the BMW Motorrad Central Knockhill Superbike class, championship leader Bruce Birnie piled on the points despite not winning in either of his first two outings of the day. Birnie however, will be challenging hard for a win in the last race of the day.

Dennis Hobbs, making a guest appearance in the Superbike class rode his BMW S1000RR machine to victory in the opening race and Inverness rider Adrian Clark took victory in race two.

“It’s great to get back out on the bike and get some more competitive laps under my belt. A huge thanks to Knockhill for letting me enter the races and l’m delighted with the way l rode. I’m slowly getting back to fitness and all these laps I’ve done around Knockhill in the past week will be really beneficial in the long run,” said Hobbs.

Knockhill Events Director, Stuart Gray commented:

“This is the largest entry list for a Knockhill Motor Sports Club bike racing round and I’m delighted with the way the season has gone so far. The feedback has been really positive and having the sidecars back at Knockhill is another huge step forward for the Club.”

Elsewhere John MacFarlane continued his winning ways and there was also wins for Jordan Fleming (Mini Twin), Paul McClung (F125) and Roy Waugh (Clubman).

The next Knockhill Motor Sports Club bike racing takes place on the 25th September. There is other bike action coming to Knockhill soon in the shape of a two day feast from the North East Motorcycle Racing Club on 23 & 24th July.
