19 race programme for the SMRC championship race weekend – May 5th / 6th

An impressive 19 race programme is in store for race fans next weekend for the return of the SMRC organized Scottish Championship racing, featuring a double header format for the Northern Saloons and Sports Cars Championship and Scottish Legends. The day and a half meeting kicks off with qualifying on Saturday afternoon from 1.30pm followed by 4 races to round off part one of the event. Part two on Sunday morning is straight into racing with the remaining 14 races scheduled to run all day.

The most surprised winner, and current Formula Ford championship leader is Ivor Mairs from Northern Ireland who inherited an amazing win with a combination of the leaders crashing out and the eventual winner being excluded, clearing the way for Ivor to score a remarkable win. Aly Dow, Ian Munro and Jordan Groncowski will be battling again, but the driver who is hoping for better luck is young Michael Gray who was on front running pace in practice, qualified 4th, only for a mechanical failure meaning that he had to miss both races. His gearbox was then stripped out of his race car in record time and donated to fellow driver, and rival, Aly Dow so that he could carry on racing, finishing 2nd behind race winner Ian Munro. The pace is going to be quick and anyone of six drivers are in for a shout for podium positions.

The Northern Saloons and Sports cars are bringing around 40 highly modified cars, some boasting over 500bhp, making it the one of the fastest series to visit Knockhill this year. Add in the mix of Scottish runners, the track will be trembling under the shear volume and horsepower unleashed at the race starts. The Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup was a frantic affair last time out with F1 star Paul di Resta’s brother Stefan amongst a number of drivers caught up in numerous incidents. A near full grid is expected again for the Minis, and Classics, as the Scottish racing scene is showing a true strength and depth at the moment.

Adult admission on Saturday 5th is only £5 (£4 in advance) and £12 on the main championship race day (£10 in advance). Action starts at 1.30pm on Saturday with 4 races and 9am on Sunday 6th with 14 races all day.
