Mazda mania concludes at Knockhill

Scottish Championship racing returned to Knockhill this weekend (21st & 22nd July) with an ambitious 30 race programme. Starring alongside the regular racing classes, the National Legends , Ma5da MX-150R, MX5 Cup and MX5 Mk1 Championships all made guest appearances.


In the Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup races it was Portlethen driver, Kyle Reid who secured the opening two wins of the weekend. David Sleigh took the honours in Sunday’s Mini race with his brother Tim content to settle for his third 2nd place finish of the weekend. Other podiums scorers in the Mini class included two 3rd place finishes for Steven Brewster and a deserved podium for Pandamonium racing’s Hamish Brandon.

Kenny Thirwall returned to the Scottish Formula Ford scene and subsequently showed the rest of the field why he won the title last year, so convincingly, by securing a brace of wins. Jordon Gronkowski, Ross McEwan, Alistair Dow and Ian Munro shared the other top three finishes.

The Scottish Legend races saw three different winners in each of the three races over the weekend. Ross Mickel took the honours in the opening race, whilst Ross Marshall took race two victory. Paul O’Brien stole the show in race three ahead of carol Brown and David Newall. Knockhill commentator Duncan Vincent manages to combine both commentary and racing throughout the weekend. Starring in the number 5 Legend, Vincent secured a 7th and 8th place finish in the first two races, before he endured a race to forget in the last of the weekend, which culminated with a mechanical failure on the penultimate lap.

In the Sports and Saloons class, Stewart Whyte managed to out-perform the rapid Radical SR3 of Colin Noble in the opening race. Noble though, would have his revenge in the 2nd, taking victory from Garry Waston’s Westfield by a mere 1.664 seconds.

Gorge Orr and Dave Colville had to settle for a win and a 2nd place finish each in the Fiesta ST Championship. Stuart Haston and Blair Murdoch both secured 3rd place finishes on the road.

Twenty seven National Legend competitors made their way to Knockhill for a weekend of racing. However, it was Lawrence Davey and Dean Brace who showed real consistency all weekend long securing themselves 5 podium scores in the process.

Also starring this weekend where seventy seven Ma5da Championship competitors competing in a range of Mazda models including MX-150R, MX5 and MX5 Mk3. The racing provided some excellent entertainment all weekend and Knockhill Events Director Stuart Gray commented:

“It’s great to welcome the Ma5da Championship competitors back to Knockhill again, they add a real colourful flavour and excitement to the racing.

“I’d also like to thank the Mazda MX5 Owners’ Club members for turning out today in support of the Mazda marque. It was a brilliant tribute to such an iconic model, that we virtually had a 1.3mile convoy of MX5 models on circuit today.”
