North East Club racers put on a superb show at Knockhill

The North East Motorcycle Racing Club descended on Knockhill this weekend for round 3 of their 2012 season (Saturday 30th June & Sunday 1st July).

Leading riders from North and South of the border headed into the weekend looking to gain the upper-hand in their respective championships. And despite a late entry, it was Montrose man Bruce Birnie who showed everyone how to ride the 1.3 mile circuit in both, dry and wet conditions.

Birnie who was in action five times over the course of the weekend took numerous victories onboard his BMW S1000 RR. ‘The Barber’ from Montrose has been one of the most consistent performers on the Scottish racing scene for a number of years, and literally has racing running through every vein in his body.

“Out there with the wets on was fantastic,” commented Birnie after a wet race victory. Birnie added, “It’s just like being on a jet ski, when you look back and see all the spray from the rear wheel, it’s just great fun, l could stay out there all day.”

Despite a little rain towards the tail end of the day, racers enjoyed a dry and sometimes sunny event. And two riders heading home on Sunday night beaming would have been Haddington duo, Paul McClung and Colvin Denholm. McClung continued his fine form this season be securing yet more podium scores. Whilst Denholm, would have settled down to watch the Euro 2012 finals tonight, content in the knowledge that he had just wrapped up the 2012 Post Classic title.

Elsewhere there was some superb racing action for assembled fans which saw closely contested battles throughout the programme. In the Thunderbikes, Derek Butcher, Calum Donald and Chris Clements traded podium places throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile, the Gilfillan brothers (Sean and Greg) had to deal with both Daniel Chappell and Chris Cook stealing their thunder in the F600 class. Kai Johnston was just to good for his Formula Junior rivals on board his Apprilia RS 125 machine.

Jillian Shedden, Managing Director at Knockhill commented:

“It’s been another fantastic event for bike fans. The action has been thick and fast, and, those that attended have been treated to some excellent racing. We’d obviously like to extend our thanks to the North East Club and their members for making the journey North to Fife.”

Next up at Knockhill, is the 1st Knockhill Club car race meeting of the season. This time round we have a special invitational for Radical Sports car racers. Alongside feature races for the super quick racers, there will also be a lap record challenge to get competitors pushing themselves and their vehicles to their limits, around Knockhill.
