BSB Support Spotlight: Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship

The Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship comes to Scotland on 27/28/29 June as part of the Homecoming Scotland 2014 – Knockhill 40th Anniversary – MCE British Superbike Championship event. The Superstock 600 grid will feature a number of Scots and some of the UK’s up-and-coming young racing stars; all aiming for podium positions when the action kicks off on Friday 27thth June.

FFX Yamaha rider, Andrew Reid (Newtownabbey) currently tops the Pirelli National Superstock 600 standings; he’ll be eager to expand upon his 22 point advantage over James Lodge (Huddersfield) and his 26 point lead over third place man, Kyle Ryde (Jacksdale) aboard his PacedayZ Trackdays Yamaha.

For a number of the competitors, this will be a local round; with the likes of Niall Campbell (Cambuslang), Jason Vernon (Dumfries) and Matthew Paulo (East Kilbride) all having joined the National Superstock 600 grid for this season. Elsewhere, Paul McClung (Haddington), Sammi Tasker (Clackmannan), Callum Paterson (Tranent) and Liam Shellcock (Oban) have entered the series this weekend as wild card entries; and despite their relative inexperience at National Superstock 600 level, will all be hoping that their intimate knowledge of the Knockhill track, will give them a slight advantage over their fellow competitors this weekend.

Another rider that knows the Circuit well is Tarran Mackenzie, who is also Scottish through-and-through, despite the accent and Ashbey-de-la-Zouch postcode.  Tarran, regularly attends Knockhill with Dad (Niall Mackenzie), accompanying the three times BSB Champion to Knockhill for his Niall Mackenzie Superbike School. Indeed, Tarran managed to squeeze in a few laps out on track (aboard is Team DW-40 race machine) during the lunch break of Niall’s latest school on Thursday 19th June.

Tarran Mackenzie, knows Knockhill well and will be hoping for strong results!

Tarren said:

“I had a brilliant time last week on my Dad’s track day, with my race bike; and to be honest that is the first time this year I’ve felt like ‘the boss’ on my WD-40 Kawasaki. I was gutted when I couldn’t race last year, when my bike broke early on, so I aim to make up for that this time!”

Likewise for Joe Collier (Leicester), Charkle King (Great Yarmouth) and James Pickford (Huddersfield); they have also been to Knockhill already this year, taking the opportunity back in May to participate in a general testing session ahead of the BSB event. The test event will have given the riders and teams a real indication about the new changes to the Circuit, bike setup and for the racers, an idea of how to navigate Knockhill’s notoriously difficult twists and dips.

For Benjamin Currie (Melbourne), Russell Brown (Starthhaven) and Keenan Armstrong (Doncaster) they took their testing exploits to a completely different level last weekend; by participating in the Knockhill Motor Sports Club Superstock 600 Championship races, offering all the riders exceptional track time, whilst also simulating tough racing conditions; similar to what they can expect at Knockhill this weekend. And for Currie, his weekend was a fruitful one, as he walked away with four race victories and some silverware for his trouble, perhaps a sign of things to come this weekend?

The Pirelli National Superstock 600 class will take to the track for the first time on Friday 27th June, with a series of practice sessions, ahead of qualifying and racing on Saturday. Sunday will see the Superstock 600 feature-race take place at approximately 12.35pm in front of an expectant race audience.

In all, around 44 Superstock 600 bikes will take to the track at BSB, piloted by riders aged between 16-25 years old. The series, acts as an ideal environment for young racers to hone their racing craft and perhaps, catch the eye of some of the BSB’s leading teams. The action should be fast-paced and exciting, as these young racers embark on securing valuable Championship points at the Home of Scottish Motorsport.

Tickets for the event can be booked online via Knockhill.com, or alternatively can be purchased via the telephone or at the gate on the day. A box office ticket collection service will be in operation for any tickets pre-booked from Wednesday (Midday) onwards.
