SMRC Season Finale: Mini, Fiesta and Classic preview

Knockhill will play host to its second season-ending event in seven days this weekend (Sunday 5th October); as the Scottish Motor Racing Club (SMRC) season comes to a ground-shuddering end! With several Championships still on the line and last-gasp attempts to chalk up those race wins expected across the board, the action should be highly entertaining; and will no doubt have the odd slice of controversy thrown in for good measure.

Controversial is probably one of many words you could use to describe a typical Mini race. There’s always plenty of shenanigans going on and plenty of post-race incident to mull over, but competitors seem to expect that as given, and just seem to get on with making the most of each situation as and when it arrives; and that’s why the races are always an excellent spectacle for race fans. On our previous post, following the last round we said that Kenny Thirlwall was the Champion. But, we where kindly reminded, that this isn’t the case; and case being the operative word. It seems that a ruling will be made this week; that could affect the way the Championship standings appear heading into this weekend. Effectively reigniting the Championship battle between Kenny Thirlwall and Joe Tanner. We’ll obviously know more on this as the week progresses, but let’s just say there’s life in the old title race yet – even if it is only a feint murmur at this stage.

Two Championships, well and truly settled are the Peoples Ford Fiesta ST Championship and the B1 Saloons & Sports Car Championship class; with Wayne Macaulay and Andrew Morrison the respective Champion of each. Out with those, every other Championship remains in the balance, some more so than others, but all still yet to be decided nonetheless.

In the Peoples Ford Fiesta XR2 Championship, things just got decidedly interesting following Steven Gray’s 2nd DNF of the season at the last round. That non-points scoring finish allowed Hamish Smart to close within 19-points of Gray at the top of the standings; and with up to 50 points available, this is certainly one Championship that could swing either way. In the ST class, 2014 Champion Wayne Macaulay will go head-to-head with 2013 ST Champion, George Orr, who claimed two race wins at the last round, and with only race wins on the agenda this weekend, we could be in for some close racing in this class come Sunday morning!

Raymond Boyd finally lost his 100% winning record in the Classics Sports and Saloons Championship; following his loss to Stand Bernard at the last round. Boyd, still remains at the top of the overall standings with a 46 point lead. Only a weekend of disastrous proportions could rob him of the title; but with class honours up for grabs (A B, C, D and E), there is still plenty to play for at this weekend’s final round.

Watch our for our next blog that will look ahead to some of the other Championships going to the wire on Sunday!
