Mini, Fiesta and Formula Ford preview and competition

Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup

In the Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup, it’s still Kenny Thrilwall who leads the way with a 73-point lead over Dunfermline’s Joe Tanner, with Edinburgh’s Oly Mortimer in 3rd place only one point behind Tanner’s total. Last time out, the trio shared one win apiece. All three drivers have proved they can win races on a consistent basis throughout the season and we’d expect the spoils to be similarly split this weekend.

Thirlwall though, chasing a third Mini Cooper Cup title, has been in this situation before and will surely use his previous experience to stay clear of trouble and pick up another solid points-haul from the weekend – expect him to be fast but cautious. Tanner and Mortimer however, need wins and they’ll no doubt be the front running pairing this weekend. All that said, it’s Mini Cooper racing and anything can happen. See you Sunday for some more Mini Cooper Cup drama.

Fiesta ST and XR2 Championship

Steven Gray (XR2) has finished every race this season on either the winner’s rostrum or the runners-up podium position. Jim Deans (XR2) has performed admirably throughout the season and a solitary DNF and DQ sees him lag behind by 63 points, with four XR2 races remaining. Expect these pair to be at the forefront of the XR2 action once again this weekend.

In the ST Championship, Kevin Whyte has seen his consistent form this year finally reap some rewards. He’s in the middle of a 3-race winning streak and blazed his way to two hard-fought race wins at the last round ahead of the two leading contenders in the ST class – George Orr (Championship leader) and Wayne Macaulay (2nd in Championship). Expect both Orr and Macaulay to mount a strong challenge to Whyte’s current domination this weekend – the action will be close, that’s for sure.

Scottish Formula Ford and Avon Tyres Formula Ford (National)

In the Scottish Formula Ford scene, Adam MacKay has been a revelation this year. Much like his Ecurie Ecosee stable-mate Ciaran Haggerty last year; he’s won all bar one of the races this year – with Tore teenager Neil MacLennan winning the other.

However, both he (MacKay) and MacLennan, as well as third placed man Jordan Gronkowski, will have to have their wits about them this weekend as 11 National competitors join the grid this weekend to form the biggest Formula Ford grid of the season. The Formula Ford competitors will enjoy three outings this weekend – with the final race of the meeting counting for the prestigious David Leslie Trophy.
