Scottish Championship Car Racing and Armed Forces Appreciation Day

The third instalment of the Scottish car racing season takes place at Knockhill this weekend (Sunday 21st June). The event, will also dovetail as a special Armed Forces Appreciation Day that will see Armed Forces personnel and their family/friends receive a special discounted entry – details of which can be found online via our event webpage.

As well as the customary top-notch car racing action, this event will also welcome up to 50 supercars – with the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Porsche all represented – and all displayed at the venue. Additionally, a limited number of passenger rides will be made available each hour for a small donation on the day to selected Armed Forces Charities. The Scottish Military Group will also be on hand with a number of classic military displays including trucks, sidecars and tanks – they’ll also be sporting attire of the era as pictured below.

On the day, an 18-race programme will entertain and enthrall a bumper crowd as seven of Scotland’s top car racing Championships compete head-to-head on the tight and twisty Knockhill track. With practice and qualifying action set to start around 8.30am, and racing from 10.40am.

In the Formula Ford 1600 Championship, teenager Adam MacKay will be looking to extend his championship lead, currently 20 points, over Jordan Gronkowski (2nd) and championship newcomer Neil MacLennan (3rd). The Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup will see battle recommence at the top of the standings; with Oliver Mortimer (1st), Kenny Thirlwall (2nd) and Joe Tanner (3rd) all vying for race wins and podiums on a consistent basis this season. This trio, have been involved in a fair share of incident so far this season and we fully expect that to continue this weekend.

John Paterson in the Scottish Legends Championship has been untouchable so far this season; he also helped himself to a top 10 finish in the McRae Rally Challenge sponsored by Beatson’s Building Supplies held at Knockhill in May. That said, with 600 points up for grabs this weekend, his fellow Legends competitors will still feel its all to play for, despite John’s successes this season.

In the Fiesta ST and XR2 Championships, it’s looking likely that we’ll see a two-horse race in both Championships this season. Former Champion George Orr currently heads the ST standings from reigning Champion Wayne Macaulay, whilst Jim Deans leads defending Champion Steven Gray in the XR2 series. All four have entered this weekend’s event and expect to see them battle at the front of the pack in each race.

The Classic Sports and Saloons Championship will see Tommy Gilmartin return behind the wheel of his Morgan, and that will have everyone on high alert given Tommy’s race winning pedigree. Current leader Howard Gordon, Harry Simpson (2nd) and Alasdair Coates in his stunning Ford Mustang will be hoping that they can string together some more strong results in their respective Championship challenges.

In the Saloons and Sports Car category competitors will be rubbing their hand with glee, as current Championship leader and winner of the opening four races of the season, Ian Donaldson is yet to enter. He may well line up on the grid this weekend as a late entry, but expect to see some super-fast racing throughout Scotland’s fastest racing Championship. Andrew Mackie, Roddie Paterson, Finlay Crocker and overall Champion from last year, Andrew Morrison will all return to action this weekend. In the MX5 Cup, Olly Ross and David Smail will go head-to-head on track in their attempt to claim the MX5 Championship title.

A mammoth 34 BMW Compact Cup racers have entered this weekend’s event; that will see the cars spilt into three groups for a round-robin style competition, with each group featuring twice on-track throughout the day. Steven Dailly currently leads the way, with a 6-point advantage over Cliff Harper and an 8-point advantage over Carol Brown in third. Last time out also saw Andrew Winchester and Phil Dryburgh make the BMW podium for the first time this season and they’ll be hoping of a repeat this weekend.

Our SMRC racedays are an exciting and action-packed day out suitable for families of all ages. Members of the public can watch multiple racing classes on one day, with up to 30 competitors competing on track at any given time; there’s always plenty of fast-paced entertainment on view, alongside plenty of heart-stopping incidents to talk about on the journey home.
