Laverty tops the times in Free Practice 2

Irish star Michael Laverty guided his Samsung Honda over the line in 49.276 seconds to take the top spot in free practice 2. The Toomebridge rider took the lead midway through the final session of the day at Knockhill, and despite others overtaking him, Laverty eventually retook the lead and remained there until the end.

Earlier in the week Laverty had stated that he felt the Championship was wide open, after the series had witnessed seven different winners in eight races so far this season. And Laverty has been knocking on the door of late at Knockhill, in the final race of 2011, Laverty secured a podium finish when racing for Swan Yamaha.

Laverty said:

“Knockhill should be good for us, generally in the past it has been a track I have enjoyed. The Samsung Honda should work well there, the track suits the Fireblade.”

On his performance in the final session Laverty commented:

“We are right in the ball park with a few tweaks to the bike from Snetterton and I am really happy. We still have some improvements to make but it is nice to know we are on top and can still improve.”

Laverty however, knows that there will be a gaggle of riders on his heels come qualifying tomorrow, including 2nd quickest in the final session, Shane Byrne. The Londoner was unable to repeat the time sheet topping performance he had earlier in the day, but will be relatively satisfied heading into day two.

Tommy Hill brought his Swan Yamaha home in 3rd spot, Tommy will be looking to set the heather alight in tomorrow’s qualifying sessions which start at 2.45pm. Hill was in dominant mood last year and will be eager to continue his winning reign at Knockhill this weekend.

Current Championship leader, Josh Brookes has been very consistent today, finishing both sessions in 4th place. Brookes will be quietly confident heading into qualifying that no-one is streets ahead and that all bodes well for an exciting weekend of racing.
