Beatson’s Race Day recap

The Beatson’s Building Supplies race day took place at Knockhill today (Sunday 8th July). There was an interesting amalgamation of racing classes on the programme, including a guest appearance from some Radical Sports Cars in the Sports and Saloon races.

And, it was David Thorburn in his Raw Motorsport Radical SR3 RS who took a double victory. Thorburn though, had to rely heavily on the superior performance of his Radical car to see off some plucky competition from Garry Waston and Doug Carter. Indeed Thorburn, had to battle his way from the rear of the grid in the 2nd race after a poor start demoted him from pole to the back of the field after the first few corners.

A delighted Thorburn commented:

“Yeah it’s been great, l’ve had a lot of fun and hopefully we can have a full grid of Radicals back at Knockhill in 2013.”

One of the most interesting classes was that of the Open Saloons, a combination of Minis, Fiestas and Classic Sports and Saloons. Arrochar racer, Shonny Paterson sole the show with two wins in his mighty Triumph TR8, although he had to fight all the way to the finish line, regularly mixing it up with fellow Classic competitors and the nimble Mini and Fiesta models. Other podium scorers included Tom Wilson (Ford Escort MK1 RS) and Bruce Weir (Lotus Sunbeam). Craig Noble in his Mini Cooper couldn’t quite keep pace with the more powerful classic machines, but he will be well pleased with his two 4th place finishes.

Legend racer, Scott Hynd’s had HOT weekend in his Legends race car, after securing a 5th and 3rd place finish in the heats, he’d have been looking forward to the Legends show down at the end of the day. Little did the Wishaw man realise, that the heat would really be on him, after his car caught fire on the 2nd lap of the final. Elsewhere in the class, David Newall and David Allan shared the race win spoils between them.

Also racing this weekend where the Formula Ford 1600 class. Ali Dow was in confident mood, securing two race wins and a couple of fastest laps in the process. Young Queensferry competitor, Michael Gray can take great pride from his weekend’s efforts. Taking home two 2nd place finishes and the Ian Forrest Driver of the Day award.
