New SpeedFair lap record and David Leslie win for Carroll

Heading into the SpeedFair weekend there were a number of activities vying for centre stage. Amongst the entertainment on offer was a classic hillside rally, supercar displays, car racing, auto-testing and even an air display by Starduster 2 pilot, Jim McTaggart.

With so much going on, little wonder fans didn’t quite know where to focus their attentions. The racing action on track was good, whilst the classic rally kept spectators, assembled at the Hairpin, amused as the racers disappeared out of sight over the start finish straight.

Jane Leslie, wife of the great David Leslie was on hand to present the winning Formula Ford competitor, the David Leslie Trophy. That honour went to Graham Carroll, a former Scottish Formula Ford champion making a welcome return to the Scottish racing scene as a wildcard entry. Carroll stormed to victory ahead of pre race favourite Alistair Dow with Michael Gray securing a creditable 3rd place finish.

“It was very good, the track was a bit cold, but l’m delighted to take the victory today,” said Carroll.

Other racing on track included three Legends races, a 30 lap enduro race and some Classic Sports and Saloon car racing. Knockhill Events Director, Stuart Gray commented:

“For a first attempt at running the SpeedFair programme under the Knockhill Motor Sports umbrella, I have to be please with the way the event has unfolded today. It’s up to us now, to pick up the baton and make improvements for next year. I’d also like to thank all the marshals, officials and racers for their attitude this weekend. Also a massive thanks to Beatson’s Building Supplies for supporting the Knockhill Club car racing this season.”

There was also a new demonstration lap record time set today by Father and Daughter combo, Colin and Heather Calder. There had been some friendly banter between the two leading up to the event, but ultimately, it was Colin who would navigate the Knockhill Circuit in a time of 44.187 seconds to set a new record. His 700bhp sprint car will hopefully be back next year as part of the British Sprint Championships. Discussions are ongoing, however it would be great to see even more of these mighty brutes tackling the twists and dips of Knockhill.

We’d also like to extend our sincere thanks to all those supercar and classic car owners’ who made the journey to be part of SpeedFair. Without their willingness to showcase their impressive machines, SpeedFair wouldn’t be the same.

The next action at Knockhill comes in the shape of the Performance French Car Show and Hot hatch Car Trackday. Spaces are still available on track if you fancy taking your wheels out on cicuit. You don’t have to have a French car, but if you do, please do come along on the day to join the festivities.
