Penultimate rounds for SMRC Championship challengers

Scottish Championship car racing returns to Knockhill this weekend for the penultimate round of the 2012 season.  We fully expect the racing action to be fierce and extremely competitive as the title contenders look to secure some vital championship points.

Several of the Championships look set to go down to the wire including the Scottish Formula Ford Championship. The single seater racing series has been unpredictable at best this year, with numerous drivers securing race wins. The title favourite however, still has to be Alistair Dow. The Killearn man, maintains a slender advantage from Glasgow’s Ross McEwan with Ian Munro (Galashiels) in third.

Ross Marshall commands a 270 point advantage in the Scottish Legends Championship. Hard on his tail is previous Scottish Champion, Carol Brown. Both drivers will head into this weekend knowing that they’ll need more strong performances to hold off the challenge from Paul O’Brien, Robbie Burgoyne and David Hunter.

In the Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup, Edinburgh’s David and Tim Sleigh continue to lead the way. David holds a 99 point lead over his brother Tim. Tim though return to the track after a massive crash last time out that wrecked is Mini. He’ll be looking to ride shot-gun alongside his brother this weekend, whilst hopefully keeping all four wheels on the tarmac.  The Mini Cooper Cup always provides ample entertainment for spectators with the reverse grid race adding a little extra spice. In the Ladies Mini Cup, Elaine Marshall tops the table ahead of Fiona Wallace and Emma Bruce.

In the Classic Sports and Saloons Championship a trio of racers had been locked on the same points total at the top of the table. Last time out however, Haddington’s Nick Boyes lost some ground on the front pairing of Andy Smith and Robert Marshall. This time around Boyes will be desperate to overcome the challenge of Roger Motherwell (Class A), as he attempts to reel the front two back in.

Scottish Sports and Saloons racer, Stewart Whyte heads into the latest rounds holding an 18 point lead over Garry Watson. Whyte and Watson (the 2011 defending Champion) have been virtually inseparable all season long. As the Championship draws to a close luck could be a major factor in deciding the 2012 Champion.

Elsewhere in the Fiesta XR2 Championship, Peter Cruickshank continues to utilise his vast experience to fend off the advances of Wayne Macaulay and Craig Taylor. Whilst Blair Murdoch, Scott Robertson and George Orr will all have Dave Colville firmly in their sights in Fiesta ST Championship.

The event takes place on Sunday 23rd September with qualifying action starting around 8.30am and racing from 11am (approx).

Tickets for the event can be purchased in advance via our website or on the gate this Sunday.
