Latest round up of SMRC action at Knockhill (May 2017)

Knockhill played host to the latest round of the Scottish Motor Racing Club season today; that saw upwards of 120 drivers battle it out under glorious sunshine at Scotland’s National Motorsport Centre.

There was plenty of drama and action on view on track, and even off it too; with a Mini Mania gathering featuring Minis of all shapes and sizes from across the illustrious marques history. Suitably, complimented by an all-action Mini Cooper meeting on track that saw incident, paint-rubbing and door-to-door racing galore. On the results front, Kyle Reid managed to haul his Mini Cooper from sixth in the grid to secure the opening race win ahead of Dominic Wheatley and Morgan Murray. Indeed, Reid went on to win the second encounter of the day ahead of Morgan Murray initially, before a 2 second penalty for Murray demoted him to 6th place, promoting Dylan O’Donnell and Mark Geraghty into the 2nd and 3rd placed podium spots respectively. In the final encounter if the day, Robbie Dalgleish managed to foil Reid’s attempt at a clean-sweep, crossing the finishing line just 0.873 seconds ahead of the SCK Motorsport man; with Mark Geraghty securing his 2nd podium of the day in third place.

In the Scottish Classics, Tommy Gilmartin secured himself two wins on-the-road ahead of Alasdair Coates and Raymond Boyd on both occasions; but with the Classic races split into class structure for the overall title, it will likely be a few months before we see just who’ll be challenging for 2017 honours.

In the Scottish BMW Championship, race one saw Greig Sutherland out-fox 2016 Champion Gary Clarke to the opening race-win by 2.991 secs. However, Clark restored parity on the day by taking the 2nd race-win; with Steven Goldie finishing his weekend with a pair of 3rd placed finishes for his efforts. In the Newcomers Cup, Frazer Huntly and Andrew Prince shared the spoils.

It was a close run thing in the Scottish Fiesta Championship with former Champion Wayne Macaulay taking a brace of wins ahead of Barry Farquharson by 0.2 and 0.5 seconds in each race; whilst, Peter Cruickshank and Steven Hay shared the 3rd place rostrum positions between them. In the XR2 side of the series, both Duncan Fox and Graeme Cuthbert shared one win apiece.

In the Scottish Legends Championship, it was that man again, John Paterson streaking away to another perfect haul of victories, his 4th, 5th and 6th wins of an extremely successful season at Knockhill. He was pushed hard all the way by Ivor Grrenwood, David Hunter and Stuart Black; but Paterson just seems to bounce from one race win to the next and at this stage it’s evident that his fellow Legends racers will have a job on their hands wrestling that top-step of the podium from the Motherwell ace, any time soon.

It was also another perfect weekend for Ross Martin, as he streaked away to his fourth successive win at Knockhill this season. Not only that, he also claimed P1 in qualifying and scored the fastest lap in both races… a dominant performance all round. Clay Mitchell and James Roe Jnr. From Co. Kildare shared the two second place finishes, whilst Matt Chisholm had another strong weekend, propelling his Van Diemen FF00 to two third place finishes.

In the Sports and Saloons Championship, Ron Cumming was the man to catch in his Nemesis Kit Car taking the opening race of the day ahead of Kenneth McKell and Robert Drummond. However, much like the Classic Championship, with up to six individual classes in the Sports and Saloons races… finding our 2017 champion will no-doubt wait until the every dying embers of the season.
