Tommy is ‘double’ top at Knockhill

Swan Yamaha’s Tommy Hill sealed a double victory at Knockhill today to haul himself back into championship contention. Hill stated his intentions at the start of the week that he wanted to be vying for podiums come Sunday. But even Tommy would admit that he didn’t expect to dominate proceedings so convincingly.

The double victory see’s Hill collect his first ever double in British Superbikes and alongside it the Steve Hislop ‘Flying Haggis’ trophy for the fastest lap, set during race one with a time of 48.703 seconds.

Hill never had race two all his own way however as Shakey Byrne led for over half the distance. Indeed Byrne had to fend off the advances of Swan Yamaha duo of Hill and Laverty before Hill eventually took command.

Hill said: “It is unbelievable to have won both races today for Swan Yamaha and I have to thank them for their hard work to get us up there where we needed to be. After some hard rounds it has been fantastic to get the sweep of pole and two race wins today. We knew we could push but it is just great for our championship; more points and more podium credits was what we needed and that is what we got and that will prove so important later in the season ahead of the Showdown.” (Source BSB)

Shane Byrne finished the race in 2nd position with Michael Laverty 3rd. Byrne increased his championship lead over John Hopkins to 31 points after the American crashed out on lap 6.

In the EVO class, Simon Andrews stormed to victory with Scott Smart and Patric Muff filling the other two podium slots.

Knockhill Events Director Stuart Gray said:

“We managed to grab a few moments with Tommy on Friday at the top of Knockhill and he said he was looking for podiums. He’s been really strong all weekend and you have to admit he is a fitting winner.

“The MCE British Superbike round at Knockhill has been superb and we are delighted with the action on track and the number of people who ventured along. It’s a great series and we look forward to welcoming them back to a sunny Knockhill next year.”
