Three’s a crowd in Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup title race

The Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup 2015 title race is shaping up to be one of the most memorable in recent times. Granted, the Mini Cooper Cup is arguably the most entertaining and action-packed series on the SMRC programme. But this year, the bar has been raised a notch, and everyone is responding. At the last round less than a second split the top four finishers in each race, with fans at some stages watching ten-car trains competing for position on track. Throw in some robust overtaking manoeuvres and the customary bumping and barging, and you have a recipe for thrilling motorsport entertainment that fans love to see.

The three title protagonists – Kenny Thirlwall, Oliver Mortimer and Joe Tanner – have shared all the race-wins this season; with the count as follows:

Thirlwall – 4 race wins and 3 podiums
Mortimer – 3 race wins and 4 podiums
Tanner – 2 race wins and 3 podiums

That results in a Championship table with just 34 points separating the top three drivers; and with a maximum of 75 points up for grabs at any given weekend… there’s still a few twists and turns in the Mini Cooper Cup tale to unfold this season.

Last time out, Kyle Reid managed to split the leading trio by claiming his first podium of the season and he’ll return this weekend (Sunday 19th July) eager to further-improve his podium count for the season. Lewis Carter and Shane Stoney have also shared the podium with messrs Thirlwall, Mortimer and Tanner this year and will be aiming to do likewise when action resumes on Sunday.

The Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup will take to the track for qualifying on Sunday morning at 9.15am; before participating in three Mini races throughout the day. Action is guaranteed in this series that sees equally powered 1600cc BMW Minis compete on track over nine laps of the 1.27 mile International (clockwise) track. A strong 21-car grid, featuring experienced Mini racers and racers competing for the Newcomers and Ladies Cups, will provide plenty of spectacle for eager motorsport fans.

Tickets for the event, that will feature a bumper 18 race schedule from seven different Championship classes, can be booked online via the Knockhill.com website (subject to advanced booking discounts).
