So, Team Scotland hits the BTCC just in time for Knockhill

If you watched the BTCC races from Rockingham at the weekend, you’ll have noticed that Rory Butcher has a new team-mate. Scot, Glynn Geddie joins the AmD with AutoAid/RCIB Insurance Racing squad for the Knockhill round and and completes an all-Scottish driver lineup for the team’s two MG6 GT BTCC cars.

“I felt as if I had some unfinished business with the BTCC and it’s great to get the opportunity to come to such a fantastic series once again. Rockingham was a steep learning curve, given that I hadn’t driven a front-wheel drive car since my part-season in the BTCC a few years ago and it’s such a competitive series to try and jump into, and make headway, without a great deal of time in the car.

“In hindsight, Rockingham was a great test for us, and the aim was to improve in each session and try to get to grips with the car. It was good to get two race finishes under our belts, although the DNF in the final race wasn’t the best way to end the weekend.

“That said though, we now head into a very important home leg at Knockhill – that will obviously take on extra significance with me and Rory being local lads. I’m sure the team will get some great support up in Scotland and I can’t wait to get back out in the car.

“I’ve got to say thanks to Shaun and the team, as well as RCIB and AutoAid, for the chance to return to the BTCC and I can’t wait to get going at Knockhill,” concluded Geddie.

On the other side of the garage, Rory Butcher enjoyed his biggest points-haul of the season at Rockingham – including an impressive 6th place finish in the final race of the day. Rockingham was also the first track to this point in the season that Rory had any experience racing a Touring Car at – after joining the Motorbase squad from Knockhill onwards during the 2017 season.

“Rockingham was the first circuit where I could actually draw on previous experience having raced there back in 2017. That experience gives you an idea of how the tyres will fair across the races and what things we need to work on to get the most from the car over the entire event. I felt we did that this weekend, and it was great to grab a few more top tens and get more points on the board for the team.

“Wins and podiums are obviously the name of the game, and I feel that now we are performing consistently well it’s time to take the next step. There’s no better place to do that than at Knockhill with home support. I know it will be a tough weekend, but there’s certainly no reason why we can’t push for more top six finishes and perhaps a cheeky podium when we arrive there in two weeks time.

“Glynn did a good job for his opening weekend at Rockingham. He’s someone I’ve known for years and raced against on a few occasions over the years, and I’m sure he’ll be a great addition to the team,” commented Butcher.

The team’s bright orange and blue colour scheme is somewhat reminiscent of Scotland’s other national drink – Irn-Bru. Indeed, perhaps the decision makers at AG Barr need to get on board with #TeamScotland for a one-off BTCC assault on home turf.

Just imagine – a Scots BTCC race win backed by Irn-Bru – that would be phenomenal.
