200 mph “Herbie on steroids” to demo at Classic SpeedFair!

One of the most bizarre, yet successful competition cars of all time, will be making a welcome appearance at the 5th Scottish Classic SpeedFair next weekend. The Formula 5000 engined VW Beetle, previously raced by Doug Niven, with thunder around as part of the impressive line up of demo cars at this special event.

Niven is to be re-united with the fabulous VW Beetle-Chevrolet Super Saloon that he raced to many wins across the country in the late 1970s. Dave Taylor has painstakingly restored the Beetle over the last two years and he will take it to Knockhill for Niven to drive. The car caused a real stir at the recent Scottish Motor Show as it was parked alond side a standard, but this one is different as its boasts some 500 plus bhp and has an estimated top speed of around 200mph!

Niven, a cousin to Scottish legend Jim Clark, raced for the famous Border Reivers team, and was the first driver to win back-to-back Scottish titles and scored many successes in saloon and GT racing in Scotland and south of the border. He will demo the car each day of the SpeedFair which is sure to bring back many memories for all those who remember the car from its Ingliston days.

Tickets for the main show event day are £15 (£13 in advanced) with action all day.
